Uploading Websites in Ethiopia on Slow Connections
Uploading a website in Ethiopia can be challenge and especially if you have many documents, photo’s to upload. Habesha.net has the following tips for uploading websites on slow internet connections.

Optimize Images & Photographs

When placing photographs on your website ensure the resolution of the photograph is not above 72 DPI (Dots per Inch).  Uploading images over 72 DPI will increase the file size of the image dramatically. Size your image by width height correctly to the size required on the webpage. Try to keep image size around 20kB / 60kB for faster uploads and to increase the user experiencing surfing your website enjoyable.

Helm 4 File Manger

Helm 4 Habesha.net hosting control panel supports a file manager with unzipping functionality. This can be valuable tool to allow the site owner to zip multiple files or the complete site. The zipped site can then be uploaded and unzipped using the file manager in Helm 4. This process will save you time uploading and setting up the website.

FTP Programs

Use a good FTP program such as FileZilla that is open source. Configure the program to upload a maximum of two files at a time. Increase the time out of transfers to allow for slower connections. Try not to download files at the same time as this will reduce the performance of the upload.

Dialup Connection

Use a dedicated dialup connection that is not shared with other uses or request other users to reduce internet browsing and close internet chat programs such yahoo messenger and Live Messenger.

When connecting to Habesha.net database server ensure you are not on a proxy network. Proxy network tend not to forward the desired ports required for connecting to MySQL and Microsoft SQL Server.

Remove Files First

When using FTP applications and on a slow connection Habesha.net recommends you first delete and remove files before replacing them. On slow connections to the internet or connections that pass through multiple NAT networks files can get corrupted easy when overwriting.

Uploading Database Files

When uploading to MySQL via PHP My Admin zip the database file when you export it. This will normally reduce the file size by 75%. When uploading Microsoft SQL Server database files, first use WinZip or Winrar to compress and archive the files. Then upload the files to a secure folder on the website FTP before the WWWROOT folder.

Joomla & Other CMS Systems

Habesha.net can save you time by pre-installing CMS systems such as Joomla, Drupal and DotNet Nuke by the means of application pack or extracting the CMS directory from server to your website root. This will help by removing the need to upload the CMS core files and leave only the template, modules and site content to upload.
